Our "Philosophy"
When provided a quality experience through a well-organized and balanced program, young athletes can develop a number of positive life long characteristics from their involvement in the sport of wrestling. We believe that even with the challenges that our young wrestlers will face, wrestling should be FUN! Of course, it is not ALL fun and games, but we will do our best to make it an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all. Our emphasis will be on participating and learning, but we will also strive to instill positive qualities in our young wrestlers that will hopefully benefit them for years to come.
We expect the following from all of our wrestlers:
Commitment
Hard work
Attitude
Motivation
Persistence
Initiative
Overcoming adversity
No excuses
Self-discipline
"There is no substitute for hard work."
Commitment and Hard work are required for success. A committed decision is a choice followed by action. Another way of saying this is making up your mind to do something and then doing it. An example of a committed decision is saying to yourself you are going to get a "A" on your next homework assignment or test and setting a goal and then doing whatever it takes to get the "A". This might mean studying extra, going over homework when finished, or re-reading out loud after completing homework. When you commit or work hard on your goal, you start to feel good because you are trying. You must work hard or commit yourself to make changes. If you want to feel better after your losses or wins, you could make a committed decision to yourself or work hard to learn from that match or experience. Here are some questions you can ask yourself after any match to learn and feel better: "What did I do well?" "What could I have done better?" "Was I prepared before the match?". It is hard to accept losing or failing, but you are not losing nor failing if you understand you can learn from every match, test, or experience. Learning is the most important word for all of you now. Learn how to win! Learn how to lose!! Learn how to learn!!! Remember to keep a positive, "can do" Attitude at all times. We can't always expect to win - our Motivation should always be to improve. Trying to do your best is the way to make your goals happen. You may sometimes fall short of your goal if you try, but you will always fall short of your goal if you do not try. The times when you fall short of your goals are the times when you can learn the most and try again. Giving all that you have or trying really hard or giving a maximum effort will increase your chances of success in all areas of your life. You must do this all the time and soon a habit will be formed because this will become the only way you know how to accomplish things or a task. Sometimes we put too much emphasis or we focus on winning or losing or getting the highest grade or highest achievement. What we really need to do is focus on our efforts or how hard we tried or how prepared we were. When we focus on working hard, trying hard, and becoming as prepared as possible, only good things will occur. We can always try harder. We can tell when we are giving it our all.
"The only time that you fail is when you quit."
" Quitter's never win and winner's never quit."
Persistence means to keep trying when you think you can't or when you do not feel like trying anymore. When you do not feel like trying anymore is a fantastic time to tell yourself you can, motivate yourself, and encourage yourself that you can achieve what you put your mind to. A clear example is when you fail a test, lose a match, or try to do something and cannot seem to get it right. You keep trying because you know soon you will grasp the concept, understand the problem, or get better because you did not give up and you kept trying. One way to be persistent when you do not immediately achieve a goal is to ask for assistance, instruction, or guidance from a parent, teacher, or coach. It is important that you take the Initiative to reach your goals. You can't always rely on someone to push you. Some times you may get angry, upset, mad, or frustrated when you attempt to do something and you do not succeed right away. A critical part of improving your skills and competitive results deals with overcoming adversity. You must be able to learn from mistakes, making losing a learning experience, turning a negative into a positive. There should be No excuses. This is the point when you must tell yourself "I can do this". You will succeed and/or learn if you keep trying. Remember that if you do not succeed the first time, you are about average. If you ask for assistance, instruction, & guidance and then try again you are more likely to succeed and learn. Learning to abide by training, practice and match rules instills discipline. Wrestling provides many challenges that will test the individual athlete's ability to discipline themselves. Self-discipline is one positive result of a successful wrestling experience that will reap benefits in many other sports, as well as in life. REMEMBER...WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE SET OUT TO DO!!!
